Richmond, VA — Republican Glenn Youngkin hasn’t yet been sworn in as the next Governor of Virginia, but recent statements and moves are being questioned by the conservative base that helped elect him.
Youngkin came back from near double-digit polling deficits to defeat Democrat opponent Terry McAuliffe earlier this month. That win is starting to look more like Youngkin didn’t win that election but rather McAuliffe losing it by his politically stupid statement that parents don’t have a right to guide the education of their children, which may have been the moment Youngkin’scomeback began.
While Youngkin certainly pandered to crowds with rhetoric, does anyone know what he believes?
Well apparently, he won’t fight back against mask and vax mandates, although he promises he won’t institute them himself, and he apparently has hired a “woke” individual, a member of the “LGBTQ community,” as his head of communications.
The Federalist reported that Youngkin “won’t take action to prevent localities in the state from mandating the COVID jab or masks for their constituents.” That was based on Youngkin’sstatement that “localities are going to have to make decisions the way the law works and that is going to be up to individual decisions.”
Youngkin did, however, add that “from the governor’s office, you won’t see mandates from me.”
During the gubernatorial debates, Youngkin promoted everyone submitting to the jabs, according to Townhall. Youngkin said: “It’s the best way for people to keep themselves safe, and I, in fact, have asked everyone in Virginia to please get the vaccine. But I don’t think we should mandate it.”
The Townhall report details conservatives calling it a “sickening betrayal.” Nick Searcy, an actor and conservative, said: How surprising. He’s already disappointing.” Conservative columnist Gavin Mario Wax added: “Sad! What is the point of winning a monumental and surprising victory if you aren’t going to change course and govern effectively?”
Then there’s Joshua Marin-Mora who appears to be the individual chosen by Youngkin as a communications staffer.
Pedro Gonzalez, the assistant editor for American Greatness, tweeted: “Youngkin got elected on culture war issues about race and sex. So, Youngkin chose a guy with pronouns in his bio to do his comms who also served on the Georgetown Latinx Leadership Forum and supports virtually everything Youngkin’s voters voted against. This is peak GOP.”
This news comes after Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel announcing a “Pride Coalition” at an event hosted by Donald Trump.
Gonzalez’s thread went on to state “I’m not surprised by any of this, just the speed at which Youngkin is sinking the knife into people’s backs, it has to be some kind of land speed record for the GOP,” and if “Youngkin boots (Marin-Mora, I’m sure he’ll be able to land a job at the America First Policy Institute.”
The NoVa Campaign, out of Richmond, Virginia, posted a photo of Marin-Mora liking the rainbow emblazoned book “Taking the Pulse of Pride” as well as other photos of him, including one showing him wearing a “pride” shirt and a skirt.
“It doesn’t get better. Hard to fight a culture war in Loudoun about teachers being fired for refusing to use pronouns when he’s likely running part of the Governor-elect’s Comms,” NoVaCampaign wrote.
News like this should make conservatives question what the point of politics is. Is it for power, or is it for principles?
As John Stonestreet and Kasey Leander wrote for Breakpoint: “When all problems and all solutions are reduced to politics, all hope rests in gaining political power. Thus, when it comes to engaging in politics, Christians must always work to keep straight what are the means and what are the ends. A decision to partner with an LGBTQ group only makes sense if the ‘end’ is to regain political power. The same decision, however, makes no sense if power is only the means and something else, such as limited government, is the end.”
