I feed birds normally in the fall and winter. I am still feeding the birds into this summer because there is a distinct lack of insects for them to eat (many species will not, can not, eat seed) I am outside most of the day, and although insect numbers have been declining over the years, I have never seen so few. I have 3 species of woodpeckers eating birdseed which I have never seen them do in the summer, rarely in the winter, they are usually eating insects and grubs this time of year in tree bark. Barn swallows used to number in the many dozens as they followed the mowing for scared-up insects. I now only see one or two occasionally following along and few if any insects for them to go after.
