Somewhat related sidenote that I found out recently: in my state, if you are a landlord that has a multi-tenant building, and you or a family member lives in one of the units of that building, you are allowed to discriminate against potential tenants and deny their application for any reason, including race, religion, etc. You can't do that if you don't actually live in the building though.
