I've been trying to advocate easing up on the "don't insult the janitors rule." Honestly, I'm more tolerant about insults even though I'd prefer not to receive them. I tried making that clear with the rules and other comments, but some users insist on thinking the worst.
You're more tolerant than I am about insults - As far as I'm concerned, if the only content in a comment is a slur - and some of them are particularly nasty - it adds nothing to the board. It's one thing to have an opinion and another to simply call people names and throw vulgarities at them.
Looking at it objectively, it seems that much of the problem is related to mods moderating their own threads - and it is a conflict of interest.
You're trying to be reasonable, and that's a good thing.

Yep, some people don’t come here for good debate or dialogue, they come here to take their frustrations and anger out on others. They’re the weasels in life that wouldn’t dare stand up to anyone face to face, even after some liquid courage. Most of them probably get manhandled by their wives.

I knew a physician who was a horror to nursing staff - just awful to them, yelling etc.
Well, he had a an outpatient that needed some testing done, and I went to his office to do it. His wife was there - and OMW - I was so embarrassed for him - she was being so rude - not screaming, but talking loudly and berating him - it was awful. I thought "no wonder he acts like that at work."
I would gladly fuck you up. Easy.
