Imagine any falling scenario. You lost your balance. Your hands are going to try to break your fall. Or you fall on your ass or your sides. You don't fall head first into the ground.
I suspect that this is their "admission" phase for the public humiliation. A bruising in the eye is not easily hidden. It's a sign of weakness or submission. Unless your story involves winning a fight or something, it means you're a lesser being than before.
It's a big club. And we ain't in it.
