So it’s not discussed because of fear of repercussions? It’s relatively rare that independence from a larger nation/union is achieved peacefully. But to not even consider that independence because striking for it could conceivably attract a violent response is cowardice.
Not violent response, more like annihilation. Jews famously have the sansom option, and they are not below nuking the entire US for retribution for being spited. Secession IS a good idea, however we dont live in a world of sane people, right now absolutely maniacal assholes are at the helm.
Sometimes you have to face your own possible annihilation to achieve such grand goals though. I’m Irish, we made some political moves in the 17th century that didn’t exactly go swimmingly. 40% of our population were slaughtered, our culture all but eradicated, our lands all assumed by foreigners save for some shitty boglands out west. Still think the jacobites were right to do what they did, and while it’s unfortunate they lost and Gaelic Ireland was lost in that defeat I’d argue Gaelic Ireland would’ve died earlier had we been willing to roll over. Many peoples throughout history have been literally annihilated for standing up against aggressors, but many more have been annihilated for rolling over before aggressors.
