What I remember is that when he neared breaking Babe Ruth's record, he received death threats. There were a lot of people losing their minds at the idea that a black man would break that record. So his race was CERTAINLY a huge topic related to his greatness.

His 'actions and words' did not reflect 'RACE'. That is the mark of an American Ball player, not a punk.

I do agree with that statement. I just think it might be important to remember that others used the lens of race to hurt and diminish him in just about every way possible. This actually makes his character in being an American Ball player, not a punk (you said it well) all the more admirable.
