Agree - I'd love to think this is true. What's interesting to me is that they turn their backs as the vehicle passes - seems it would be difficult for some stranger in a car to say "hey, I'm coming down the road so turn around."

unusual yes. however not unheard of.

Example,

2004 when we left Iraq. Every service member rank E-7 or higher ALL received the Bronze Star. Many did what we did. When our Platoon Sargent was awarded the Star we did an about face while in formation.
