It was a great circle route (shortest distance). Flight plan landing is near China Lake.

I think they are counting icebergs.

There's basically nobody up there to save them if anything goes wrong on that route. Some tiny communities, frozen remote outposts.

Maybe they were avoiding some weather?

Not sure the route is a big deal. Coming home from Germany on a transport, we landed in England and then Greenland before getting back to Fort Dix.
