The bad guy picks up John and presses the gun to the previous wound, to inflict pain so he would stay conscious long enough to see his daughter murdered in front of him.
He grabs the bad guys gun and forces him to shoot, the bullet passes through john into the bad guy killing him. Johns buddy grabs a gun and headshots the brute.
