Yeah, its so easy and cheap to just get a old ultra small form factor PC and put linux on it, there is no reason to have a "smart tv" connected to the internet.

I had a smart tv once. It was bullshit. The raspberry pi runs kodi just fine.

Yeah, that is basically it. You can even get a LIRC dongle and "teach" it off any existing remote or get something more purpose built or a small wireless keyboard/mouse combo. The only excuse is that you don't want to spend a little bit of time to have a better experience.
