I bought a keyboard and mouse once that forced me to create an online account. I returned them immediately. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why I needed an account to use these peripherals.

A light bulb? Seriously?

It won't take very long before hacks emerge making the devices work off line again.

just wait. they'll start charging monthly subscriptions just to use your own thermostat. gas/electric is seperate (and the HVAC companies are probably already in on it)

never connect (or buy) anything to the internet without taking into consideration a) it can and will be hacked b) the company can brick it anytime. usually to force "upgrades" c) the company can be hacked at anytime and YOUR data is at risk
