Akulas are MOSTLY attack submarines, however the Borei class ballistic missile submarines are in fact Akula class submarines (Project 971U Akula II's in fact) -A Borei is just an Akula that gets fitted with nuclear missiles. They carry 130 nuclear warheads, each. They are quieter than our Los Angeles class, and are considered the biggest threat RU presents in the naval sphere.
Russia calls them Akulas. Russian news and media call them Akulas as well. (nobody calls them a borei).
