Jesus willingly went to the cross basically as a giant fuck you to the pharisees. The idea was simple: They'd been bleeding people dry, destroying entire nations with usury (and specifically loans for sacrificial animals), and creating wars with blood libel (which they accuse everyone else of using against them). Good old division and "your fathers fathers killed my fathers fathers, all the way back to cain and abel!" Basically: original sin.
