That seems like a false dichotomy, as liberty has never been a left-wing value.
Left/right came out of the French Revolution against the monarchy. Left against the monarchy. It was influenced by the American Revolution and the Enlightenment, ergo liberty. See, for example, France's "Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen", which was directly inspired by the Declaration of Independence.
Yep, left has always been pro-communism, anti-liberty. Kikes are the left, and they lied about their aims then as now. Fight the despot king, they said, get liberty, they said.

There's nothing new about retribution or abuse of power by revolutionaries when they come to power. What's surprising is that the newly formed US didn't fall into the same trap, for the most part. It probably helped that they were fighting against a faraway monarch.
