No one is calling for disaster relief to be returned to the states. This would be benificial for most of the country. 1. No slush funds for things like housing and food for illegals. 2. People who live in states with little to no disasters are not subsidizing those who choose to live in areas which do. 3. States are more likely to use this money effectively when responding to disaster. DeSantis has done exceptionally well managing hurricane relief in Florida. 4. FEMA employs over twenty thousand people and staffs 10 reginal offices as well as one in D.C. This massive bureaucracy can be trimmed back to a reasonable level if not eliminated altogether for tax payer savings. It's also worth pointing out that FEMA was actively trying to prevent private citizens and originations from assisting with hurricane relief.
