I just read through the Hecklers Sticky.
Down votes lead to brigading and then massive drama.
Because of down votes and not being to post or comment and thus not be able to fight back, people create alt armies. More drama.
I have spent almost 2 decades without needing “imaginary points” and spent probably at least a year of my life commenting and posting on the net.
Why do we points? We don’t.
But we need a way to curate content and control spam.
So, remove the down vote and turn it into a spam reporting function. -10 takes the content out of public view. Moderators then have to actually mod and check to see if it is spam or brigades. If brigades then reset to zero and it goes back to the public. If spam it goes to null death.
Upvotes turn into a “like” function.
I have no clue why comments need votes. Come on people, bulletin boards for ages didn’t need this childish accomplishment rating system. Remove it completely and just leave a report button. Honestly, once people are in a thread they read all the shit anyways.
Maybe, if you really need an upvote ability turn it into a stack overflow function and use it as a beat answer. But ... it’s this type of site all about discussion?
As more people come here, the need to fight brigades will become necessary. But if you never let it happen you just saved hours of dealing with drama.
