I feel stupid but what's a warrant canary.
It's a statement that basically says we haven't been served with any sort of legal action that would compromise our users privacy.
The idea is if the feds demanded information about one or more of this site's users, they would probably also issue a gag order that would prevent the admin from disclosing that to us. But they (maybe) wouldn't be able to require the admin to publish a lie. So if the canary disappears, we would essentially have some sort of warning.
Although I've heard a lot of interesting arguments about canaries recently. Many Some people are of the opinion that they're entirely worthless if you have a third-party service like cloudfare that the feds could work through. Others think canaries are only worthwhile if done a certain way.
Im dont think a canary is 100% in either direction, meaning, i wouldnt put it past a corrupt deep state to just update a canary themselves or pull out bodyparts til the admin does it. But i also think it is worth the attempt, if it does ever not get updated on the schedule, be extremely suspect.
Just don't trust it 100%
Yeah, I think that's a good way to look at it from an individual user's standpoint. That said, I hope Poal has the best canary it possibly can.
Hmm... both you and GreenSmoke bring up points I wouldn't have even thought of. I definitely appreciate all the responses. Danke
