From all the discussion I've read about canaries recently, here are a couple of my takeaways:
- In order to be effective, a canary should be updated on a schedule.
- Updates should not be made automatically by a bot; at least a button should have to be pressed by the admin.
- We should probably have some inkling of what the canary laws are in the admin's country. Can they compel speech? Can authorities take over the site and refresh the canary themselves? In other words, some explanation of what the canary does and doesn't guarantee might be helpful -- maybe even put it in the canary.
Naturally, all of those things make it harder. And the canary is just one more thing Poal needs to do in a constantly growing list. But it would be nice.
