Humans store learned words and just a few letters are enough to recognize whole words.

You can enable that feature in your user preferences.

It is currently only enabled for Post content and comments, but might also extend to the PM box later.

Thanks to @KHro_ for suggesting me to implement it: (your comment in the link below will look broken if you enable BR, that's normal.)

https://poal.co/s/Neat/642304/f1f94470-98fb-459e-9b72-2f68f1152719

Edit: This implementation won't work on browsers released before 2021 (not supporting String.replaceAll() method)

Edit2: Added a fallback for older browsers, should be working now. (you might need to refresh your browser's cache to load the new code).

Isn't this how our language easily becomes niggerfied. This sounds like digital ebonics.

Yea as an English nerd I'll pass. The spelling of words carries etymology, historical connotations and additional meaning.
I could see how it might aid fast digestion of long articles, but with enough reading comprehension "bionic" reading comes naturally. From a technical standpoint it is pretty interesting though.

The spelling does not get altered in any way. So not sure what you are talking about. Speed reading in the classical sense can't keep up with the modern world. Context gets lost.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19751073/

Lots of studies have been done on different methods of speed/skim reading.

I misunderstood something then. Maybe I'll check it out

[–] 2 pts

lol Not really as it doesn't change the content of the words, but only increase the first letter's contrast which really boosts reading (focus and speed).

> boosts reading (focus and speed).

I can already speed read. My dad taught me how when I was younger. I'll check it out but still think it's some sort of voodoo kek

[–] 3 pts

One page I was reading about referred to slow reading as "verbal" reading, where you feel like you have to simulate the sound of someone reading the words in your head. Major slowdown.

[–] 4 pts

I don't get it. I tried it but it weirds out my old eyes.

[–] 2 pts

Guess it's more powerful for longer texts than shortish content and comments. Also the setup including background colour and font and so forth might play in. I'd suggest you throw bionic reading into your search engine and try something out to get to know the thing.

Good news, it's used a lot for adhd and authism. It seems to help them a lot. You're probably normal ha ha! Doesn't work for me either, it's very distracting. I can read normal text just fine.

I could not agree more. I tried it on my phone and computer and it makes it nearly impossible to read.

Alright, bionic reading enabled, let's see where this leads...

I'll tweak the CSS to improve the contrast in grey and dark mode.

The fine tuning is well appreciated. Thanks again, because to me this kind of stuff can be a milestone in the information age we live in. And with implementing it into the site, the users seemingly get an advantage. Big thumbs up

Right now it's slowing me, oddly... The bold part triggers a stop in my brain

Make it fully bionic, like there's just the bold part

[–] 1 pt

One thing I noticed is that as I was reading past the words, my mind would linger on the boldfaced things from earlier. So the words were getting more attention due to their novelty.

Wow, it works. Nice.

Great example of a solution looking for a problem.

Sometimes a thing looks so neat at first sight but turns out to be a completely useless distraction.

No homo.

Experiments sometimes lead to useful things.

Thank you! I had not put the time into actually posting it to /s/IdeasForPoal as you suggested, but I appreciate that you still put in the time to implement this feature!

I noticed on Waterfox for me that this comment displays the apostrophe with a different character. In waterfox it is a lowercase "a" with a caret* ("a-circumflex") above it: https://poal.co/s/Neat/642304/a8bdbb64-3dd8-47a9-94fa-d16ec8aa1d34#cmnts

In Ungoogled Chrome it is a "tm" character.

It is likely on my end though. I will do some updating and cache clearing and everything shortly to see if that helps correct it. Just noting it now before doing that stuff in case others are seeing it also.

Thank you very much for working on that! After all of your fixes to it, I cleared cache and it all displays properly for me now in those two browsers I mentioned.

Didn't quite understand what you meant til I turned on the setting. Think I'll stick to what I was doing before.

Nice feature!

Saw this linked, thought I'd leave it here for anyone interested:

Suspicion meter rising. Looks like there are several that do this. Interesting stuff.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise. DEI has become mandatory for many places. Also, Poal is where I got the link for swift read. Total perversion of White society. It's shameful.

[–] 1 pt

When I searched for the swiftread extension on the chrome store I found 2 results... https://pic8.co/sh/9jZPsp.png Wtf?

[–] 1 pt

Idk. I don't use the app, just saw it on Poal and wanted to pass it along. Idk much about apps, but someone else pointed out that they had a fag flag on their page, too.

[–] 1 pt

Fair enough, I rarely use them myself. I was just surprised to see a 'voat' extension and that it uses reddit comments.
