REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
It's annoying because it demands we do another click to get to where we want to go.
You sound like my old aunt.
It was missing a focus() that required you to click another time in the text area to start typing.
With that fixed, you have to click only once, exactly like before when you had to directly click in the visible text area.
Why not add the missing focus then?
The new button is still smaller than the old comment area making it slightly harder to click.

Did you not read my comment?

The new button is exactly the same size as it uses the exact same css class.
Just read.
Makes it much harder for disadvantaged people to comment. This is literally Jim Crow 2.0.

How so?
I guess button is a smaller target than the larger text box.
For one, they have to be able to read the button text and make sense of it. /s
I could imagine some smooth brain not being able to find it.
Maybe that'd be a funny prank, if it were made transparent or switched with the logout, something like that for a week.
No!
Any way to have it put the text cursor in the box when the button is pressed? Currently it requires a second click to start typing into it.
Fixed
Works on mobile. Would be nice to have a blue collapse comment box button next to the preview button as now I feel obliged to leave a comment.

Spambots?
I am thinking this might be the reason. But the bots have already mastered the art of the reply so I don't know how much this would curb things.
How is this supposed to make the site better?
I'd assume that mostly people read discussions, so a text box at the top is another thing to scroll past. On mobile this would be more relevant.
I've noticed it also adds some pause to writing a top-level comment, to make you think that maybe you should read the others first to see whether someone has already said what you're about to post.
I dislike it.
You can't please everyone.
What downsides are there to the old approach? Now it's one click either way to start writing a comment.
It's different and I don't like it.
