That's appears to be a black snake, common in the Carolinas. These fuckers will join you in your home happily.

Yeah, he identified it as a black rat snake, pretty much harmless. I swear it looked an awful lot like a cottonmouth though, and I decided to not take any chances.

They can get large and they will bite. We used to see them lying on walking paths through Carolina woods and we'd just step over them, far more worried about black bears.
