Ours are already a month old. Ran around and asked everybody near me for a handful of fertile eggs each, total grab bag of genetics… it’s fun. Frizzles, naked necks, giants, I was hoping for a seabright but it appears not.

Also, try ducks. So much more fun, less pokey to hold, eggs are better IMO, and they put on weight as fast as Cornish.

I had a pet duck as a kid and he was very sweet to hold. I would put a towel on my lap incase he had to drop a duck deuce but I don't recall that ever happening. There's not a lot of birds you can hug like that.

They have the greatest personalities.

Concur on ducks. They're also incredibly messy.

[–] 1 pt

Do you also eat them? I was curious why people do ducks of chickens give good eggs.

[–] 2 pts

Heck ya. They are delicious, better than rabbit for small homestead and more fat, which is why you can’t live on rabbit. They clean fast too, just skin them. Plucking is a thing I have never understood how people justify that much time… duck can be served in all sorts of ways, but duck breast cooks up like a good filet mignon.

I have a homemade chicken plucker, works great. Takes me about 4 minutes per bird, from kill to in the ice water. Thinking about a drill attachment for ducks because you can’t scald them. What breed of duck do you do? We have some silver appleyards that are still young.

Ducks and chickens taste differently, as do their eggs. It makes for good variation, though ultimately you get better yield with the chickens.

Ducks are so much easier. They don't peck each other to death. In fact, they won't fight at all if you raise them together and only keep one male past maturity. Even if you break these rules that won't fight much. They can handle colder weather (they don't need a coop in most of the US, just a predator-proof run). The two big downsides are they they poop a huge amount and they are hard to pluck.

[–] 1 pt

I never tried duck, but their eggs are better than chickens.

I have ducks, and babies on the way. I have a mixed batch of chickens majority are Jersey Giants.

[–] 1 pt

Total respect then.

Local guy has chickens that are huge, rooster is easily 8” taller than the 40# propane tank that is in his area. Stilll trying to get some eggs…

What breed is the roo?

We have some Jersey Giants on order. Most of our flocks are buff orpingtons, barred rock, Rhode Island reds, and Easter eggers. We want to see if we can get some chickens with larger breasts.

You'll be waiting a long time. Roosters generally don't lay eggs, but that of course assumes the rooster is male.

[–] 3 pts

you would be foolish not to. everyone had better start doing something because its about to get real.

I'm completly ready. I have chickens and ducks, a dozen eggs daily, eggs hatching, baseball field sized gardens. Enough canned food for at least 5 years. I intentionally have deer, bear, rabbit, and hog infested land. At least 10 people I can barter with in the neighborhood. Ammo to last decades. Even have caves fully furnished. Family has land with untapped oil up the road, and we have a lot of civil war silver bars.

[–] 1 pt

caves? that would be sweet. yeah, i say bring it on, with my best duke nukem voice

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnny day now!

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

Chicks, man. I can dig it.

[–] 1 pt

These kind won't hit you with a divorce.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

They produce a much more manageable form of chickenshit too.

[–] [deleted] 2 pts

We have over 100 chickens and 2 incubators.

[–] 2 pts

So you're the reason I'm waking up at 6 am?

[–] 3 pts

Haha mine squawk at all hours.

[–] 2 pts

Yep. Literally the only person. Fucking weirdo.

[–] 1 pt

I'll be a weirdo. I bet you won't call me starving.

[–] 1 pt

What the fuck? Are you breeding jews?

[–] 1 pt

No I'm breeding jew free food.

Incubating eggs is a lot of fun!

[–] [deleted] 1 pt (edited )

You didnt get the Farm innovations incubator and thats a good start. I burned about 20 eggs in 2 batches through one and only got 3 hatches. Doesnt keep stable temperature. And i got 2 of them because they fucked up and lost one so sent another and the lost one showed up later. Neither of them work worth a fuck. Right now ive got about 20 blue cochins that should start laying in a few months.

I tried 2 new incubators as well and both had inconsistent heating despite moving them to a warmer room and wrapping them.

Lost several batches of eggs that way and was a huge waste of time and money. Building my own now, but still pondering on how to fix these or a reputable replacement.

Try to find an old redwood on. I haven’t found one in my area that somebody hasn’t already beat me to it. A bit pricey but better than losing a bunch of eggs.

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for one. Making a cabinet style one, but would be nice having a regular one that works.

Thats what I've got so far. Havent had much time to work on it for a while since ive been setting up a 100 sqft coop and an additional run. Increased airflow and a diffuser to spread the heat out and make it circulate better. 6 temperature and 2 humidity sensors and i wrote some code with a real PID control loop to control an SSR to control the temperature precisely. Will also be able to hook up a humidity injector to it if i ever get around to completing it. Controlled by an rpi2w.

Cool. So far, mine is still just a plywood box with foam board lining it. I need to get the temp stuff or thermostat order and get it finished. It will be pretty big, cabinet style, and is probably overkill for what I need right now, though.

I'm planning on building a hoop coop but like yours. I like that style with the external access to the nest box.

I want chickens but I have 4 legged furry niggers that would bark at them constantly.

Before reading the comments, I thought the post title was saying "doing this" meaning you were selling eggs to someone or rearranging them at a 'store' and you were grouping them in the fashion of nigger crime statistics.

Specifically these images came to mind:
