Russian Navy ensign, St Andrew's flag

needs moar radars....

I don't know RU equipment but the radars probably work something like this:

  • Air search radar
  • Surface search radar
  • Navigational radar
  • Gunnery fire control radar
  • Fire control radar for SAM system 1
  • Fire control radar SAM system 2
  • Fire control radar for CIWS
  • Possible fire control radar for short-range SSM if any

Then you have to duplicate radar transmitters as required to ensure 360 degree coverage.

U.S. ships work the same way, but we don't duplicate systems (e.g., our ships only have 1 SAM system). Plus we tried to build the ships in such a way to allow maximum fields of view for the transmitters.

Thanks for the info I suppose separate phased array radars are all tracking different targets.

I was wondering why the top one was tilted slightly?

The top two radars (on the foremast) are almost certainly search radars. Why the one is tilted I don't know.

The two radars on the mainmast (further aft and shorter than the foremast) might be phased arrays, but also look like they can be mechanically rotated. Seems very strange to burn money on a phased array system and then make it mechanically steerable... Regardless they are two-dimensional (rectangular) which means they can electrically steer the beam both horizontally and vertically. That makes them most likely air warfare (SAM) fire control radars. Possibly with air search function like the U.S. AEGIS radars.

There are no other obvious phased arrays but they could be hiding inside weather domes, like the testbed AEGIS radar used for tornado tracking.

Hopefully some poalarbear is familiar with RU equipment and can comment.

All I can see are the walking dead from all those towers and dishes and domes. Viva La Microwave!
