While foldable phones are masterful engineering, I rathe consider it an overhyped gimmick, as foldable mobile phones are less robust and not water-resistant by design, the same argument people use against user-replaceable batteries (debunked: Benefits of user-replaceable batteries § Water irresistance myth (en.everybodywiki.com)).

How come the Air View and Air Gestures features on the 2013 Galaxy S4 were considered blatant gimmicks (but actually useful if wider implemented), but a design compromising water resistance and robustness is so hyped?

Smells like hypocrisy.

They've run out of ideas. They're trying to "reboot" the flip phone just like they do with old movies/tv shows.
