Life is a rare phenomenon, sentience even moreso. The universe/multiverse is a sandbox, you have the ability to create purpose and meaning for it.

Otherwise you are correct, endless meaninglessness.

As an atheist I think when you close your eyes for the last time it's just over. I think religion came about because man thought that dying after a lifetime of being aware of his existence was pointless so the lie was cooked up for future generations to make them work. Life is ultimately pointless.
