There are many white guilt children’s books, but this one I find to be especially egregious. It’s about how all the poor little Mexican migrant children weren’t allowed to play with the mean white kids and had to go to school in a cow pasture.

So my in-laws give it to me today. Smiles, pride. “Our university gave this an award this year!” Yeah, I bet it did.

I grew up in a 50% Hispanic town. So did my mom. There were very few issues between the two groups, and when there were issues, it was because the Mexican girls started shit. I’m not having some white bread liberal Yankee deliver lectures to my children about what the “Mexican childhood experience” was like. I lived it. They didn’t.

There are many books I do not allow my young kids to read. Some things being put in children’s books now days are just not appropriate subjects for children younger than 10

I really do think it’s fine to teach age-appropriate history. At some point in time, every group has treated some other group of people like shit. Some groups of people or historical actions are objectively more shitty than others - the Japanese in WWII were far worse to our POWs than we were to their civilians in the US. And usually, everybody in a shitty situation has contributed to it in some way.

But it that context isn’t in there, or if a child is too young to understand, it’s not appropriate. It’s not appropriate for fucking picture books!
