There are many white guilt children’s books, but this one I find to be especially egregious. It’s about how all the poor little Mexican migrant children weren’t allowed to play with the mean white kids and had to go to school in a cow pasture.

So my in-laws give it to me today. Smiles, pride. “Our university gave this an award this year!” Yeah, I bet it did.

I grew up in a 50% Hispanic town. So did my mom. There were very few issues between the two groups, and when there were issues, it was because the Mexican girls started shit. I’m not having some white bread liberal Yankee deliver lectures to my children about what the “Mexican childhood experience” was like. I lived it. They didn’t.

I never dealt with blacks until college. But yeah, growing up around Mexicans really gives you some perspective.
