Very long story. I was once a mod there, till I had a fall out with SilverSurfer, the creator and main operator of v/Cheers, so bear that in mind. In other words, my version may be skewed slightly, but the gist is this.
SilverSurfer had strict rules in place at Cheers. It really was a great concept and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In my mind, his rules were pretty simple. Keep it clean, no hate, no politics, no religion. Seems reasonable enough. But as with all such things, trolls came in just to violate the rules. SilverS would ban them, rarely giving a reason for the bans, which further ticked off many. Yet the bans were well earned. The trolls would then bitch and moan anywhere and everywhere on Voat. They'd create new user names (the same thing you see everywhere) just to continue to taunt. Because he reacted, they just escalated.
The trouble was, SilverS took everything way too personal. He wasn't able to just let it go IMHO. Instead of just ignoring the BS, he'd jump off and fight the battles in comments to the trolls bellyaching posts. That never works with those folks, it only intensifies the conflict as most of us know. I think it just got to the point after a couple of years that he just couldn't take it anymore and gave up. Took his ball and went home, more or less and Cheers withered on the vine. It was actually a shame.
Me, I never ban anyone, the internet is not real life - LOL. I'd defended SilverS along the way, but eventually got tired of the drama. One night I was in the middle of a normal back and forth conversation with a new Voat user, nothing but chit chat about a song he posted, and suddenly, out of nowhere the user was banned. The guy PM'd me and said 'WTF'. I PM'd the two main guys, SilverS and I forget the other, and asked them 'what the hell'. I got a snark response from SilverS that the guy was a known troll just using a new user name. I called BS, and checked the guy out ... I have no clue if it was a troll using a new name or not, but his profile had absolutely nothing in it that would lead anyone to believe he was. So I just quit contributing to Cheers, and a week or so later, without even speaking with me again, SilverS pulled my mod. I moved on with my life.
So anyway, the long and short of it was that Cheers was a great place. People were banned for breaking the rules, which was legit, though they could've added a good explanation, which they didn't. SilverS just got carried away, I think, and it eventually wore him into the ground where he was seeing enemies where there were none and fighting battles he couldn't win.
Anyway, I planned on creating my own music sub ... v/TheWinchester. It was a sub that had been abandoned, so I put in a sub request for it at the exact moment that PuttitOut decided he wasn't gonna give away subs anymore without telling anyone - LOL. Another user, , created v/PaddysPub on Voat awhile later and I went on there with him to run that music sub instead. It was never intended to thumb our noses at SilverS or Cheers or anyone there, just a place for those of us who didn't want to play the game there anymore to call home, without overbearing modding.
Sorry to bore ya with the long history though - LOL. But that's as seen through my eyes.
That explains all the fucking bans I got.
His rules were okay ... his implementation of such, not so much. Anyway, that was my thought on it.
Cheers was interesting to me. I posted there pretty much from day one of it being open. If you look at my Voat acct it shows my most posted to was there. Outside of Cheers I could be very volatile(right I know, who would guess) but in Cheers I posted music and videos and chat w people and that was all.
I used to trade PMs w Silver. I don't know why, but dude seemed to like me for some reason. Even after the drama started up. I'd try to defend the sub and him in other subs and threads. Because he always treated me cool, and I tried to keep my own bullshit out of that sub. I knew others had issues, but I Never did. So I had to say so. Im not privy to the behind the scenes stuff like you were. But I had a lot of history in there as a user.
I even have a sub request at Voat for cheers. Which I think is a legit request, I fill all the rules in spades. It of course just sits.
Cheers was a great place, and I actually like SilverS and my story was the same with him. I was a mod, but I did my best to stay out of the drama, which apparently caught up with me when I disagreed with a decision he made. But I have no ill-will towards him or anyone there, even after leaving I still considered him a friend ... it was more choice to no longer hang there than anything. All in all, I met a lot of good people and enjoyed the sub. Hopefully when the whole PuttitOut drama plays out, you can get the sub and revive it. It was and can still be a super sub.
