My wife and I were out with a group of friends this weekend. Five couples. The topic of Russia / Ukraine came up and everyone was free with their thoughts and comments. Split pretty evenly between pro-Russia and pro-Ukraine. I was quietly listening, until one of the husbands asked me what I thought.
To paraphrase my reply, I said "I'm not going to claim any special knowledge of the situation, insight into the way people feel, or deep understanding of root causes. I can only comfortably say that the situation is not as black-and-white as either side is making out, and I will reserve judgement until things are less fluid. But feel free to spout off CNN and FOX talking points at each other. It's fun to watch."
They left me out of it after that, which was what I was hoping for. There was some definite tension and resentment in the room until the topic switched to something else.
Yep, this is how they've made it these days. You simply must have an opinion, and then use Wikipedia sources to back it up along with talking head points to show how correct you are.
Nauseating. There isn't honest conversation much anymore.

I'm almost always on the outside of any conversation like that one. Whatever the distraction-du-jour is, I tend to let people yammer about it while poking holes in both sides.
BUT if you don't totally 100% agree with THEIR side then you are automatically considered to be wearing the opposing jersey and are assumed to be just as fanatical for that side as they are for their side.
That is why you HAVE to have an opinion. So they know what box to put you in. Friend or foe.
Yeah, pretty much. It is why "reconciliation" seems further and further away.
I mean yeh, im sure there was. It was a great reply until your autism launched a coup and took over the last sentence.

Interesting take.
same, he can be factually correct but still word it like a fucking autistic sperg and nobody will listen to him.
I just tell people I see it as market manipulation. 'Follow the money' is a pragmatic way to screw with their programming.

Also a very good tactic.
