This actually happens. One of the girls at work was telling us maybe fifteen years ago when her son was in grade school the office needed him to call his Mom, and handed him a rotary phone. It ran along the same line IRL and was hilarious when she told it. The young kid couldn't even conceive how it worked ... he thought it was like magic or something.

I know my parents had a rotary phone in their house for awhile past when they were being phased out, they had to pay an extra charge for it to work on the line. I don't know if they got sick of paying that fee or if the phone company stopped the service entirely. I was a cool old phone, a big one that hung on the wall.
