Yesterday I bragged a little bit about my newfound ability to dunk a basketball and how much it impressed my black neighbor (I'm pretty sure I heard her say "he cute" as I walked back inside). And it occurred to me that this may have been a bit insensitive, as basketball has long been a staple of black culture and I may have been appropriating that culture by being suddenly good at dunking.
But since doing NoFap I've been taking more of an interest in social issues and I want to do the best for our nubian brothers and sisters. Therefore, I'm going to take it upon myself to not be so good at basketball. In addition, I'm going to pronounce words ending in 'ing' and 'er' exactly as they are spelled and try to shake hands with other white people instead of fist bumping. (Can I still fist my black neighbor or is that their thing??)
I also want to (without appropriating culture or claiming it as mine) explore the rich diversity of experience that negroes have cultivated. So I'm going to try cooking some soul food recipes like fried chicken and waffles and I'm going to try stealing some gum from the 7-11 on the corner. (I'll do something nice for Pajeet and Rupinder to make it up to them when I get the chance. When is Indian appreciation month anyway?)
What are some other ways I could avoid appropriating black culture while still celebrating and uplifting colored people colored americans? What are some things I could say differently to avoid microaggressions?
I'd be especially interested to hear your input on this.
Happy Black History Month! Wakanda forever!! ✊🏿
