That all makes perfect sense to me. It's similar to how some men, but mostly women get addicted to the false social interaction (attention) from social media. There's little to no actual effort involved and a comfortable lie looks as good as the truth to many people.
For some it can get so bad as to impact their actual IRL life by skewing their expectations of reality.
