while the other half reported having a very chatty internal monologue.

That is me. I never have to worry about being alone, my internal voice is always on. If I see something I immediately hear all thoughts about it. If I'm not paying attention to anything, the inner voice sings songs.

Same here. My inner monologue is a constant companion providing extra context on what I see, hear or do. It is like a personal assistant that I can have a conversation with in my head or out loud and be better able to reason through most anything. In the background my inner monologue becomes an ad-free radio station that plays music. Most of the time the music is good, but sometimes it gets stuck on whatever my brain last heard and that gets annoying if I don't like the song.

The override for that earworm is to sing (loudly) a song that you like and hits you. While singing it, remeber the good memories that the song is tied to (hooking up with a girlfriend, some great time you had with friends). You usually don't need to get very far into the song to replace the annoying one. The obvious downside is if you need to replace a song when you are around people.

I can usually get rid of the annoying earworm by taking over and forcing a Rush song like 'Spirit of Radio' or 'Limelight' to play instead. Why those two songs have such override abilities is something I've not figured out yet, I'm glad they do work well.
