The response should not be outrage, it should be ridicule. These "scientists" are ridiculous, their study is so flawed that they, and the institution and journal that are represented in respect to this paper should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. They SHOULD be, but they won't, because they are likely well aware of the statistical fuckery that is going on, it is deliberate only for the purposes of creating headlines for use in MSM, who will bleat out "Muh Science!™"
