Actually, the people who made it named it GIMP. The people who maintain and improve it joined the GIMP team. People who have nothing to do with it are trying to pose like part of the team and force a rename with social extortion.

Back in the 90s, we used this thing called "irc" and sometimes we had to say "Oops! Wrong window." No idea how this thread even became open on my machine, but please, everyone excuse my inappropriate reply.
Good ol' IRC. I was sysdmin in charge of Tribes and Tribes II, among othe videogames, and all the game chat was just IRC in a game wrapper. I got pretty familiar with some of it's intricacies.
I advise you to have at least one more beer. It may all make more sense after.
