A gas station near me just implemented a policy for purchases over $50 where they'll check your ID, and the name must match what's on the card. No name match, no sale.

I don't know how it's done in other countries, but American credit cards are tracked by social security number. You can put whatever name you want on your card, the corporation will know it's you. Most stores don't even bother checking your credit card against your other ID.
