It was awesome; a truly gorgeous place, I mean aside from the putrosity outside. And also the landlord, who was just the kind of yuppie leftist shit one might expect to meet in a downtown urban area. Owning our own place is nicer in most ways; but I wish we'd bought that building when it came up for sale because it was shockingly cheap for such a fabulous old building, despite it's horrific location. We don't have brass doors, windows, or elevator cars in our house, though...

Much of the enjoyment of my house is simply in the fact that it's far enough away from Downtown LA to not be a disease ridden hole of scum and villainy. And we can see ocean from the back door, which is somehow an expensive 'feature' to have these days.
Also, I didn't have a million dollars back then, because I spend like a sailor.
I should add a few additional subterranean floors, though. That would be cool. Also, the garage needs lifts, so that my expensive cars can drip oil on each other instead of just on the floor.
Digging down is a complete different structure and please consult an engineer. I have done it but be mindful of the dirt.. clay.. lime and granite.. good luck on the last.. but the best.
