You guys don't really think his reason for buying Twatter is to restore it to some bastion of free speech that it never was, do you?
That's just the reasoning he's using to get people behind him. He might throw a bone to the crowd for that purpose but I'd wager he wants the tech for something related to Neuralink, or maybe even Tesla or SpaceX. The man has been around the block and knows how to use PR to his advantage.
He's not in this to counteract censorship.

Because an arbitrary character limit on one specific implementation of Twitter's source code means that the platform and its algos can't be retooled and repurposed for other things like machine learning.
