Accidentally shoot someone and see what happens to you.
Even draw pistol, don't point it at anyone and re-holster. As a citizen that could get you a couple years depending on judgement.
This also highlights how poor a lot of the police are trained with their loadout. A lot of time shooting paper targets from a static position is all most get.
I don't see how he isn't facing a charge related to negligence. I understand that this was not his intent, but for certain crimes intent does not matter.
I would get rid of most of the special protections that elevate police above the normal citizenry if I was in charge, there would be a lot less "mistakes" and more thought about how to handle a situation properly. I myself have been in a bunch of scenarios where reflecting after the fact came to the conclusion that if I were a police officer I would have just shot the other party and got away with it v.s. conflict avoidance.
