Situational Awareness is a catchphrase that fat losers borrow from police departments to sell their Rex Kwon Do-style Krav Maga-like self-defense classes and consulting fees for corporate safety seminars that are mostly common sense. Absolutely, definitely NOT a situational awareness. Situational awareness means you also knowing a scenario where you lose out and avoiding it entirely.
She has to get home from her medical appointment in a city filled with nogs. There is no avoiding them. Is she supposed to wear a suit of armor when she walks down the stairs? Just stop.
Like you said, NYC is an urban jungle. There's a reason I'm not living in NYC, and perhaps she could have thought about moving or some other precautionary measures if she lived there long enough. Did she all of a sudden get dropped into NYC and had to find her way home? I don't think so.
Is it a tragedy? Sure. Could it have been avoided? I believe so. Have I learned something from this? Definitely, and I wish people learn something lest they end up like her.
