She could be so aware of that guy that she had her back to the wall and made 60 seconds of straight eye contact with him and had her pepper spray out and he would still knock them the fuck out.
Absolutely, definitely NOT a situational awareness. Situational awareness means you also knowing a scenario where you lose out and avoiding it entirely.
She has to get home from her medical appointment in a city filled with nogs. There is no avoiding them. Is she supposed to wear a suit of armor when she walks down the stairs? Just stop.
Like you said, NYC is an urban jungle. There's a reason I'm not living in NYC, and perhaps she could have thought about moving or some other precautionary measures if she lived there long enough. Did she all of a sudden get dropped into NYC and had to find her way home? I don't think so.
Is it a tragedy? Sure. Could it have been avoided? I believe so. Have I learned something from this? Definitely, and I wish people learn something lest they end up like her.
