These days I always think a faked death MIGHT be a way to escape something. The president of Enron conveniently died and his family got to keep all the money because he didn't fulfill all his conviction appeals so instantly became innocent. Also of course if you get some plastic surgery you can live out the rest of your life in some places without much trouble (although that is getting harder).
