I think the day we are defending Europe has long past. Why are we spending our money when they're quite capable of taking care of themselves. This is just another cold war era thing where we protected the west when it was weaker and more vulnerable after WWII ... today it's just one of those things that has outlived it's mandate, but as with anything government, they simply just can't reassess and do away with it.
