Back in the 80s I worked with an old guy , well in my youth he seemed old , who was in the Wermacht. His family were devout Catholics, they despised Hitler and the Nazis. Some French partisans had set up an ambush killing several officers and enlisted men the night before. They were orders to round up military age men from a nearby village and execute them. My coworker said it was about 15 of them , just boys and old men. He and another soldier protested , said they weren't going to do it. The C/O told them they either follow their orders or join the villagers against the wall.
