I couldn't get my car to start probably because of the battery, my coworkers car kind of worked but power steering and brakes weren't working normally.

OMG, it's winter and we are all going to die.

That said, it's a good idea to run your car at least 15 minutes every day in -30 or below, just to keep your battery charged.

You let it go two days and you might be calling a tow truck on the third.

It's TERRIBLE to just idle a cold engine though. oil is viscous as fuck and oil pressure is only lower when the engine isn't running at all. Far better to just drive the damn thing (takes about 20min of driving to recover from the start), or plug in a battery tender.

But a Good battery, as in one younger than about 3 years old and never allowed to go flat, shouldn't have any problems with a month of no-starts in -40 temps which still being able to start the engine.

Could always install a damn block heater and let the engine have an advantage (use a coolant heater and you have instant heat too, though that'll go away unless the radiator is blocked off)

It would be more correct to use the Kelvin scale for everything, as "cold" is just the relative difference of temperature between two objects.

This is bad news for electric cars as well. Batteries don’t do well in the cold. I have pulled a many forklifts out of a blast freezer with ruined batteries.
