Okay it's not that there aren't nice parts of Long Beach. There are a lot of hard working Asian immigrants there etc. But there's a lot of shitty Black (let's be honest) parts and they already struggle with no stores wanting to move into those areas. It's all weird little ghetto-y liquor stores in some parts. The proper stores that are there tend to be kind of discount places like Aldi. So now they're going to raise wages by $4/hr, not because of market demand. (If no one would work in the grocery stores, they'd HAVE to offer more). The gov't is just imposing it. What do we think will happen to the affordable prices at Aldi? The hours of half the workers at Aldi? Prices are going up, right? And some of those workers are getting laid off. Then, as usual, the nogs will start stealing more and then the store leaves. Just WHY do people keep trying to fix these "problems" in ways that only make them worse???

They're just guaranteeing that only the biggest companies will survive. I live in an area where there are normally a handful of mom-and-pop grocers in each town. It's already the case that these places have to charge more just to survive, but the prices are still reasonable enough that more affluent folk and retirees will keep the doors open, just to go to a place with faces they know. They'd like for that all to go away. I'm not supposed to be able to go in and talk to my local butcher and know where meat is coming from, and know that it's from local farmers. Nope, I'm supposed to walk into a grocery store and just hope the Mexican stocking the meat fridge can understand me when I ask if they have a particular cut. Better yet, I'm supposed to walk into that store without the confidence on any given day that there will be much meat in the fridge at all. I've been to a couple of the major grocery chains lately and the availability of meat has been shit - always plenty of "ice glazed" frozen chicken from Tyson though. Yippee.
