Ive tried downloading things on a mobile device without the app stores. Easy as pie if I want the program on a desktop. Heck I could even find the mobile version and download the apk with a desktop. For nearly every apk I wanted to legally get through using a mobile device you are boxed in. App stores only. The options the desktop gives dont exist. Even the search engine results are useless.
Mind you I didnt try desktop mode at the time. Doubt it would work though since that situation was clearly artifical.
What shitty browser are you using? I suggest Fennec, from F-Droid, loaded with adblocker. Never had issue downloading .apk from the various apk sites.
