They just want your identity as always. Same reason every other site asks for a phone number. Same reason why email accounts tend to demand one too.
Your choice to believe that, I don't. a customer had spam problems on their forum and it ground to nearly a halt when we instituted phone verification for them.
So now they can get presented with a warrant and have all those anonymous names tied to a real life name because of the phone number.

SPAM isn't dangerous, just annoying to deal with, so you put up a barrier. This was instituted to remove "make 4600 a week from home "posts. The data isn't kept once an account is verified.
