It's very difficult to change the genome of a wild species. If we had the ability to do this mosquitoes would be gone by now (they're trying as we type). I read a bit more into barcoding. From what I have read researchers map the genome, and identify a unique portion of that genome to be the representative "barcode" for the species.
Personally, I'm going to keep a close eye on mosquitoes. If scientists can be successful in manipulating the genome of mosquitoes, we should expect other species to be treated the same way.
